What Are the Early Signs of Laryngeal Cancer?

Persistent voice change, swallowing difficulty or a neck lump warrants examination for laryngeal disease. These symptoms do not mean cancer, but prolonged symptoms need investigation.

What should you know?

Smoking and alcohol are important risk factors. HPV is particularly relevant to oropharyngeal cancers and should not be described identically for all laryngeal cancers. Laryngoscopy identifies suspicious areas; tissue examination confirms cancer. Treatment depends on stage, location and individual health. Early detection may improve options, but a fixed cure percentage should not be promised.

Assessment and next steps

Assessment covers the mouth, throat and neck; endoscopy or tests are selected when needed. Antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines and surgery require an appropriate diagnosis. Avoiding smoke and maintaining suitable hydration may reduce irritation.

Care and when to seek help

Difficulty breathing or inability to swallow saliva is an emergency. Persistent one-sided pain, a neck lump, voice changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
