Mouth breathing may be temporary during a cold. Persistent symptoms warrant investigation of obstruction, allergy or other causes; this sign alone does not prove oxygen deprivation of the brain.
Assess dryness, bad breath, snoring and sleep quality. In children report persistence, dental or jaw development concerns and breathing pauses. Treatment targets the cause; not everyone needs surgery. Taping the mouth does not remove nasal obstruction and can be hazardous, especially in children. Sleep-related breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness warrant apnoea assessment.
Diagnosis uses symptom duration and examination; endoscopy and CT are selected when needed. Saline, appropriate nasal medicines and sometimes surgery may form an individual plan. Not every sinus complaint needs antibiotics.
Seek emergency care for swelling around the eye, reduced vision, severe unusual headache or neurological symptoms. Use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water in nasal irrigation devices.
This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
