Anosmia means loss of smell and hyposmia reduced smell. Blocked airflow and injury to the smell system are different mechanisms; infection, polyps, trauma and medicines can contribute.
Post-viral loss does not always mean direct destruction of a nerve. Assessment covers onset, nasal symptoms and other neurological signs. ENT examination and smell testing help clarify the cause; imaging is selected when needed. Relieving obstruction may improve smell but cannot guarantee full recovery. Do not dismiss a new persistent change simply as ageing.
Assessment considers nasal blockage, infection history, medicines and smell testing when needed. Imaging is not required for everyone. Treatment depends on the cause; the degree and timing of improvement vary.
Check smoke and gas alarms and food expiry dates. Smell changes with head injury, new neurological symptoms or one-sided bloody discharge need urgent assessment.
