Why is Newborn Hearing Screening Important?

Newborn hearing screening identifies possible loss early. The “1–3–6” targets are screening by 1 month, diagnostic evaluation by 3 months and early intervention by 6 months if loss is confirmed.

What should you know?

Not passing is not a definite diagnosis of deafness, but repeat and diagnostic appointments should not be delayed. A pass does not exclude every possible or future hearing problem. Keep the result and follow the plan with the paediatrician and audiologist. Confirmed loss calls for individual hearing aids, possible implant assessment and communication support. Speech outcomes cannot be promised identically for every child.

Assessment and next steps

The ear canal and eardrum are examined; hearing tests and tympanometry may be needed. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects. If you have a perforation, a tube or previous ear surgery, a clinician should choose drops or irrigation.

Care and when to seek help

Sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear or rapidly worsening pain require urgent assessment.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
