When is a Runny Nose Dangerous?

A runny nose commonly accompanies colds or allergy. Persistent one-sided, bloody or offensive discharge, particularly after injury, needs assessment.

What should you know?

Clear discharge alone does not mean a cerebrospinal fluid leak; one-sided watery discharge after head injury needs urgent evaluation. A child with one-sided bad-smelling discharge may have a foreign body; suspected button batteries need immediate emergency help. Colour and duration alone do not indicate antibiotics. Fever, eye symptoms and general condition affect decisions.

Assessment and next steps

Diagnosis uses symptom duration and examination; endoscopy and CT are selected when needed. Saline, appropriate nasal medicines and sometimes surgery may form an individual plan. Not every sinus complaint needs antibiotics.

Care and when to seek help

Seek emergency care for swelling around the eye, reduced vision, severe unusual headache or neurological symptoms. Use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water in nasal irrigation devices.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
