What Do White Spots in the Throat Indicate?

White tonsil patches may occur with viral or bacterial infection, stones or other causes. A photograph or colour cannot determine whether antibiotics are needed.

What should you know?

Fever, pain, cough, age and examination guide testing. Stones often look like small solid deposits, but appearance does not fully confirm the diagnosis. Do not remove patches with sharp tools or take leftover antibiotics. Severe one-sided pain, difficulty opening the mouth, inability to swallow saliva or breathing trouble needs assessment for an abscess or another emergency.

Assessment and next steps

Assessment covers the mouth, throat and neck; endoscopy or tests are selected when needed. Antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines and surgery require an appropriate diagnosis. Avoiding smoke and maintaining suitable hydration may reduce irritation.

Care and when to seek help

Difficulty breathing or inability to swallow saliva is an emergency. Persistent one-sided pain, a neck lump, voice changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
