What Are the Causes of Ear Itching?

Ear itching can relate to dermatitis, irritation, wax or infection. Not every itch is fungal, and suction is not needed for every case.

What should you know?

Note links with cotton buds, earphones or new cosmetics. Pain, discharge or hearing change warrants canal and eardrum examination. Antifungal, antibiotic and steroid drops depend on the cause; self-selected combination drops may delay diagnosis. Avoid inserting tools or scratching and reduce moisture. Diabetes or immune suppression warrants earlier review for pain and discharge.

Assessment and next steps

The ear canal and eardrum are examined; hearing tests and tympanometry may be needed. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects. If you have a perforation, a tube or previous ear surgery, a clinician should choose drops or irrigation.

Care and when to seek help

Sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear or rapidly worsening pain require urgent assessment.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
