A choking sensation may relate to stress or globus, but genuine breathing difficulty must not be assumed to be panic. Inability to breathe, noisy breathing or rapidly increasing swelling needs emergency care.
Distinguish globus from food actually sticking or painful swallowing. Being able to swallow solids does not exclude serious disease completely. Persistent symptoms, weight loss, a neck lump or voice change needs ENT assessment. Examination investigates the cause; endoscopy alone cannot explain every case fully. Stress support and suitable therapy can be planned after concerning causes are assessed.
Assessment covers the mouth, throat and neck; endoscopy or tests are selected when needed. Antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines and surgery require an appropriate diagnosis. Avoiding smoke and maintaining suitable hydration may reduce irritation.
Difficulty breathing or inability to swallow saliva is an emergency. Persistent one-sided pain, a neck lump, voice changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.
This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
