Nosebleed First Aid: Do's and Don'ts

The first step for a nosebleed is sustained pressure on the soft nose while leaning forward. Ice on the back of the neck is not the main treatment and does not replace pressure.

What should you know?

Do not recline backwards, which allows blood into the throat. Note when bleeding starts. Swallowing substantial blood can cause vomiting. Recurrent episodes warrant assessment of medicines, dryness and other causes; do not attempt cautery at home.

Assessment and next steps

Sit upright, lean forward and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for 10–15 minutes. Breathe through your mouth; do not tilt back or repeatedly release to check. Afterwards avoid picking or forceful nose blowing.

Care and when to seek help

Seek emergency care if bleeding continues, is heavy, causes weakness or breathing difficulty, or follows head injury. Do not stop prescribed blood thinners yourself; recurrent nosebleeds need assessment.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
