Throat itching and dryness may relate to dry air, allergy, mouth breathing or irritants. Persistent symptoms need cause-specific assessment; antibiotics are not needed in every case.
Note new medicines, smoke, workplace exposures, blockage and meal links. Suitable hydration, avoiding smoke and improving room air may help. Allergy or reflux is assessed through symptoms and examination rather than automatic medication. Lip or tongue swelling, wheezing or breathlessness after food or medicine requires emergency help. Report persistent voice or swallowing changes.
Assessment covers the mouth, throat and neck; endoscopy or tests are selected when needed. Antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines and surgery require an appropriate diagnosis. Avoiding smoke and maintaining suitable hydration may reduce irritation.
Difficulty breathing or inability to swallow saliva is an emergency. Persistent one-sided pain, a neck lump, voice changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.
