How is the Loss of Smell Treated?

Smell-loss treatment depends on the cause. Nasal treatment for allergy or polyps, surgery for selected obstruction and smell training in some post-viral cases may be considered.

What should you know?

Training involves regularly and attentively smelling familiar odours; benefit may take time and varies. Do not put essential oils inside the nose or apply irritants directly. Steroids require an appropriate indication and risk assessment. FESS targets sinuses while septoplasty corrects the septum; they are different procedures. Persistent loss needs reassessment and practical safety measures.

Assessment and next steps

Assessment considers nasal blockage, infection history, medicines and smell testing when needed. Imaging is not required for everyone. Treatment depends on the cause; the degree and timing of improvement vary.

Care and when to seek help

Check smoke and gas alarms and food expiry dates. Smell changes with head injury, new neurological symptoms or one-sided bloody discharge need urgent assessment.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
