Treatment for nasal crusting depends on dryness, postoperative healing, infection or irritation. Picking crusts can cause bleeding and further injury.
Suitable saline spray and surgeon-recommended rinsing may soften crusts. Use safe water and a clean device. Oil-based drops and antibiotic ointments are not needed for everyone; choose products with a clinician. Persistent one-sided crusting, bad smell, pain or bleeding needs examination. After surgery, the surgeon decides whether professional cleaning is necessary.
Diagnosis uses symptom duration and examination; endoscopy and CT are selected when needed. Saline, appropriate nasal medicines and sometimes surgery may form an individual plan. Not every sinus complaint needs antibiotics.
Seek emergency care for swelling around the eye, reduced vision, severe unusual headache or neurological symptoms. Use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water in nasal irrigation devices.
