How is Allergic Rhinitis Diagnosed?

Allergic rhinitis diagnosis relies on symptoms linked to exposure and examination. A positive skin or specific-IgE test alone does not establish clinical allergy.

What should you know?

Assessment covers sneezing, itching, watery discharge, season and home or work environment. Testing helps when diagnosis is uncertain or results would change treatment or avoidance advice. Broad panels and endoscopy are not mandatory for everyone. Non-allergic rhinitis and structural blockage are alternatives. Do not impose extensive food or environmental restrictions without matching results to symptoms; agree an individual plan.

Assessment and next steps

Treatment depends on symptoms, age and other conditions. Nasal steroids and antihistamines help when indicated; follow the product dose and technique. Long-term treatment needs monitoring, especially in children.

Care and when to seek help

Do not stop medicines on your own before testing. Immunotherapy may help selected allergies but does not guarantee a cure. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or lips requires emergency care.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
