How Does Earwax (Cerumen) Affect Hearing?

Wax blocking the canal may reduce hearing, but hearing loss should not automatically be attributed to wax. Sudden loss or reduction persisting after removal needs further assessment.

What should you know?

Symptomatic wax is removed by an appropriate method. A trained professional may use electronic irrigation, microsuction or instruments in selected cases; irrigation is not universally obsolete. Manual syringing and an electronic system should not be treated as identical. Perforation, tubes, previous surgery and infection affect method choice. Avoid high-pressure water or buds at home.

Assessment and next steps

The ear canal and eardrum are examined; hearing tests and tympanometry may be needed. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects. If you have a perforation, a tube or previous ear surgery, a clinician should choose drops or irrigation.

Care and when to seek help

Sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear or rapidly worsening pain require urgent assessment.
