Globus: causes and care for a lump sensation in the throat

Globus is a lump or foreign-body sensation in the throat, usually distinct from food actually sticking. Reflux, muscle tension and stress can contribute, but symptoms should not automatically be labelled psychological.

What should you know?

Food sticking, painful swallowing, weight loss, a neck lump or persistent voice change warrant further investigation. ENT examination and, when needed, digestive assessment help identify the cause. Reflux medication does not help every case; antidepressants and other medicines should not be started without a clinician. Hydration, reducing habitual throat clearing, voice therapy and support for stress may help selected patients.

Assessment and next steps

Assessment covers the mouth, throat and neck; endoscopy or tests are selected when needed. Antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines and surgery require an appropriate diagnosis. Avoiding smoke and maintaining suitable hydration may reduce irritation.

Care and when to seek help

Difficulty breathing or inability to swallow saliva is an emergency. Persistent one-sided pain, a neck lump, voice changes or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.

This information does not replace an individual consultation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a medical assessment.
